CBD Products for Pets: Learning the Essentials

By: Andrew Howley, BS Chemistry/Biochemistry

The use of CBD wellness products as a holistic approach for the aid of mental and physical health is continuously growing in popularity. We’ve come to know that incorporating CBD into one’s everyday routine can provide relief for a variety of things such as sleep and rest, muscle and joint pain, occasional anxiety, and much more. As with humans, other animals can also experience similar severe health ailments. Our customers reported it even helped their elderly dog regain his appetite. However, a large difference between the two is that easily accessible over-the-counter options are a lot more available for humans compared to other animals and pets. This is beginning to change as CBD wellness products are starting to pave their way into the animal and pet world. Research shows that CBD can have a major positive effect on animals just as it does for our furry families humans. Not only is CBD pet products readily available for animals in several different forms, but more importantly they can help them live their best everyday lives! Here are 5 facts to help you decide if CBD is a good option for your beloved pet.

  1. CBD interacts with different animal bodily systems extremely similar to how it does in humans.

Animals and pets can experience the benefits of CBD and other hemp-derived cannabinoids through their very own endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a signaling pathway present in all mammals, and its purpose is to establish balance and regulation in the body. The endocannabinoid system is generally made up of three parts; receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes. When all three parts are working together, the endocannabinoid system helps the body communicate properly and can aid in the restoration of particular areas. The endocannabinoid system influences and can affect several areas of the body such as muscles, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, skin, bones, pancreas, liver, and more. The endocannabinoid system for typical house pets such as dogs and cats are generally believed to be very similar to the human endocannabinoid system. In fact, dogs have more endocannabinoid receptors in their brains than humans do, which makes them more susceptible to the effects of cannabinoids such as CBD and THC.

  1. CBD products specifically designed for animals and pets can aid in a variety of health issues.

The use of CBD products for animals has been shown to alleviate several health issues and conditions. The most common ailments known to have a lasting positive reaction with CBD include, but are not limited to:

  • Inflammation and muscle/joint pain

Inflammation and muscle/joint pain typically go hand in hand. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to signal and reduce inflammation in the muscle and joints, which therefore helps reduce the pain signal affiliated with these locations.

  • Balance anxiety and ease stress

Anxiety and extreme stress are very common in animals and pets and often lead to troublesome behaviors. In many animals anxiety and stress can be triggered by loud/unfamiliar noises, abrupt movements, being left alone for too long, a past traumatic experience, an unfamiliar setting, or from simply not socializing with other animals or humans frequently. CBD products for pets often help ease nervousness in animals and can provide feelings of calmness. Generally speaking, CBD may help take an animal from a state of panic back to its normal functioning level of equilibrium.

  • Seizures

A number of studies have shown that CBD may help with epilepsy in pets and also may help reduce the frequency of seizures that occur. In some cases, CBD may act as an anticonvulsant and prevent nerves in the brain from firing too much or uncontrollably as well as lower the number of electrolytes in the brain which lead to extreme seizure conditions.

Although there have been several studies on these topics and how CBD may help an animal or pet control pain levels, anxiety, and seizures, it should not be seen as a “cure”. If your pet has severe medical conditions please visit a licensed veterinarian first and ask about using CBD.

  1. The milligram dosage of a CBD product varies based on the animal, the animal’s size, and the animal’s health issue at play.

Choosing the correct dose of CBD for your pet can sometimes be confusing. We know that animals have an endocannabinoid system just like humans, and we know animals are more susceptible to the effects of cannabinoids compared to humans, but still, how do we know how much to give a specific animal? The three major factors in figuring out the CBD dosage for your pet come down to size/weight, the potency of the CBD product, and the health issue or ailment that is being treated.

Higher doses of CBD are typically recommended for more serious health conditions and lower doses are more beneficial in regards to occasional anxiety or overall well-being. Higher doses are also recommended for animals or pets who are heavier in weight, compared to smaller animals or pets who do not need as much. When trying out a new product, it is always good to start at a lower quantity.  Then you can establish a “starting position” and slowly move up in strength from there. A safe rule of thumb for CBD dosing for animals is to administer about 0.2 milligrams of CBD per pound.

Again, many factors play an important role in figuring out the most beneficial dose for an animal or pet. It’s important to keep in mind that all animals react to CBD and cannabinoids differently, and it may take some time to figure out which dose works best for them.

  1. The use of CBD for animals and pets may cause potential side effects, as it does for humans.

The potential risks and side effects in regards to the use of CBD for pets is very similar to that of humans. Side effects typically come into play when overconsumption of a product has occurred, meaning the animal or pet was given too large of a CBD dose. The most common potential side effects for animals and pets known to occur include diarrhea, fatigue, drowsiness, and change in appetite. In most cases, the side effects that may occur are mild in nature and do not need any necessary treatment to alleviate, and will get better over time when the CBD dose begins to wear off. The most common ways to alleviate these side effects are to rest, stay hydrated, and intake a small meal or nutrients if possible. It is important to note that if a side effect does persist over time or severely worsens you should seek a licensed veterinarian for medical attention.

  1. There are a variety of CBD products designed for animals and pets on the market.

Before giving your animal or pet any type of treatment you should first consult your local veterinarian and consider any current health conditions your animal or pet has. When looking for the right CBD product you should think about the health ailment you are attempting to treat, the severity of the ailment, the quality of CBD oil and ingredients used in the product, and lastly the CBD potency of the product.

Higher quality ingredients and higher purity of CBD oil being used are usually associated with a higher cost, but it’s important to make sure you are getting a product that is free of pesticides, fungicides, solvents, heavy metals, or any other type of contamination that your pet could potentially ingest. The manufacturer of the CBD product should provide test results that show the proof of CBD potency as well as proof that there are no present contaminants.

One of the best ways to administer CBD to an animal or pet is by liquid. Using a liquid product is very beneficial because you can easily adjust the CBD dose drop by drop and a liquid can easily be applied to a normal pet treat or water/food bowl. The most common CBD products for animals or pets are flavored tinctures, however, you will see a large variety of other products as well such as edible treats and topicals.

ANDREW J. HOWLEY, CHEMIST

I’m a New Jersey native now turned Coloradoan after attending the University of Colorado at Boulder and earning a degree in chemistry with a minor in biochemistry. I’ve completed several different types of projects and experiments during my schooling, but my favorite one was researching the concentrations of nicotine between different types of flavored pods used in Juul vaporizers. I’ve been working for H3L Labs now for almost two years, primarily carrying out lab processes such as extraction, rotary evaporation, liquid chromatography, and product formulation. Besides working in the lab, I enjoy staying active by hiking, running, skiing, lifting weights, and doing Crossfit. I also have been practicing the martial art of Muay Thai for over 4 years now, and I have one amateur fight under my belt. When I’m not pushing my body to its limit I like to relax in my free time by taking different forms of CBD and playing video games, watching sports, and trying my hand at new cooking recipes in the kitchen or on the grill!
